Customer complained

Saturday, May 10, I visited the Family Dollar store in Baltimore, Maryland, located at Madonna Mall. Upon entering the store, I found that the item that I needed was not on the shelf.

It was sitting in the aisle on a U-boat. I went to the front and asked one of the cashiers if there was someone on the floor who could assist me with opening the box on the U-boat. She pointed to a gentleman who was at the door, and I later learned his name was Heidi. I asked him if he could come and help me get something.

He came down to the aisle. I showed him what it was. He asked the cashier if anyone had a box cutter. They all stated they didn't, except for one lady who said that she had one, but it was her personal one.

After about two or three minutes, she handed him a box cutter. As we went to walk down the aisle, another customer stopped him and asked for assistance in another aisle. He then stopped in his tracks to help me but went to assist the other customer, so I stated the lines were long. I would go join the line and just bring it to me.

While I stayed in line, he put it at a different line, not the one I was in. Once I got to the cashier, I explained to her that I had one in my hand and that he put the other one at the first cashier that needed to be scanned. She scanned the box that I had twice and told me I could pick that one up on my way out the door if I wanted it. So I paid and checked out.

When I picked up the box, it was a smaller box than what I paid for, so that meant there was a price difference. I went back to her and explained that to her and stood there waiting for a few minutes while she attended to two other customers. I stated, 'Did you forget about me?' She said no, 'I'll tie my line down and then wait on you.' I said that's very unprofessional because I stayed in line, did everything correctly, and you chose not to go and get the item and scan it. By that time, she was very unruly, and the lady cashier in front of her called for the gentleman at the door.

I asked, 'Where is the manager?' She said, 'I am one of the managers.' I said, 'Can I have your name?' She said no, 'I don't have to give my name.' Then the gentleman Heidi came over and asked what the problem was. She gave him my items and my receipt and said, 'You wait on her because I'm not.' The store was unkempt, not clean, and not only that, she was at the register eating chips, smacking, and I had to wait for her to finish eating for her to bring up my next item.

Up to you. You just should not have gotten in line.

Again, he left and went to help another customer. So was I supposed to follow him around helping customer?

You should have stayed with the employee and let him hand you the item. You had no business going to wait in line.

This is in response to the 2 negative comments:I wrote this feedback, with the intent to hopefully assist other Family Dollar consumers that may be dealing with a similar issue as mine. It was definitely not to be put in a position to defend myself.

However, as we know, there are those in our society that are either appreciative of any help that they can capitalize on, and then there are those who feel the need to spread negativity, attacking others, for no other apparent reason, but to make themselves feel better. Previously, I did not divulge the many other personal issues that I was dealing with in my daily life, because I was definitely not looking for any sympathy. But for those ‘haters’ out there, who seem to have no empathy whatsoever for anyone but themselves, I feel like I have to. My childhood home recently caught on fire and burned down to the ground; it was ultimately deemed a total loss.

In addition, my 85 year old mother has a serious heart condition, and is frequently going in and out of the hospital. Since I have Durable Power of Attorney over all her affairs, I am also working with a fire restoration company in the recovery of any personal effects that are salvageable, as well as, the identification of all her nine cats that also perished in the fire.

This is important to her as she is still holding out hopes that one of them possibly escaped and is still alive. In conclusion, at least I am trying to be helpful to others, in the few moments of my precious spare time, instead of utilizing it to attack others and spread hatred!!

Please see below for what I submitted via their feedback form:
I am having issues with returning and/or exchanging items at several of your stores in the San Antonio, Texas metro area. I have attempted to return and/or exchange items, according to your return policy, listed on the familydollar.com website.

Several stores (I have attempted returns and/or exchanges at a minimum of 5+ stores) are not adhering to your return or exchange policy and are requiring me to return on a weekday during daytime hours when the store manager is present. Please note that this happens even when an assistant manager or a shift leader is there. I am a Senior Tax Accountant, working 80 to 90 hours a week, and my schedule on weekdays includes being at work before the stores open and leaving work after they close. Thus, I am unable to come during the day on weekdays when the store manager is present.

In addition, I have attempted to return and/or exchange on Sunday, my only day off, only to be told to return on a weekday during daytime hours when the store manager is present. The customer representatives are in violation of your return policy for the following reasons listed below:
1) The original return included a digital coupon and the store associates are not trained to change the price in the cash register.
2) Not allowing returns and/or exchanges when it involves a clearance item, even though all of your return policy criteria are met.
3) Not allowing exchanges, even with the receipt, when the item is still in the original packaging and is within the 30-day time period; therefore, in adherence to your return policy.
I am a loyal customer and visit your stores religiously every Saturday at 8 PM and have spent hundreds of dollars within the past six months. I do enjoy taking advantage of your weekly advertised deals and digital coupons; however, my weekly visits are quickly becoming both time-consuming and inconvenient. In addition, I have items that I am now forced to keep but have no use for due to your customer representatives' continual violation of the return policy on multiple occasions; as a consequence, the 30-day time period has expired.

Furthermore, I have taken the time, on two previous occasions, to fill out this same form, only to receive no response. Finally, I am not faced with these issues while shopping at your competitors. I have provided my mobile number below.

Please feel free to contact me via email or mobile. More importantly, please just make contact!
Sincerely,
Jennifer A.

Pros:
  • Good deals on the weekly flyer and digital coupons
Cons:
  • Call stores with narrow aisles and horrible customer service when it comes to returns

Preferred solution: Full refund

User's recommendation: Do NOT purchase any items that you are not 100% sure about unless you have plenty of time on your hands to attempt to return these items at one of the stores on a weekday during the day!

Agree! Her place of business is open 9-5 M-F.

Closed Saturday/Sunday. No way she cannot find a spare couple hours. I wonder what her employer would think of her whining about her job preventing her from finding time during a weekday to run an errand?

Especially when say a lot of her job tasks can be done at 10 pm as easily as at 10am. Her Senior position should also offer added flexibility.

Guest

It sounds like you need to be more selective when you choose what to purchase. Too many people scam that Saturday only $5 off $25 coupon adding items to reach $25 only to return some later. I also don’t buy that you don’t have one weekday off (or a half day) a month to handle other pressing issues.

Customer complaints on employee

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Family Dollar - Customer complaints on employee

I was purchasing some items from your store in Plainfield at 600 Park Ave., and there was one item that didn't have a price, so your employee Nana— that's what she told me. Her name was said that it only rang up a penny.

I said, 'OK, well, I'll get two of them.' She said, 'No, you can't purchase them because they're only ringing up a penny,' so I said, 'OK.' That means you're gonna buy them. She said, 'No, I'm putting them in the back.' I guess she thought I left the store, but I was still there, so she brought them up to the register to purchase herself, but she saw me and tried to hide them. I took a picture and asked the cashier her name, and then she yelled in the store, 'Why do you gotta know my name just 'cause I wouldn't let you purchase the items?' I said, 'Because I'm calling corporate.

Please, someone contact me at 908-361-****. Melissa Graves, thank you.

This isn't the Family Dollar website, it's a public consumer site that anyone in the world can view. You shouldn't try to post your full name and phone number for some random person to start calling you. Obviously, NOTHING costs 1 cent and it doesn't really matter what happened with the item, you weren't going to get it for a penny either way.

Cyndy Xbn

Exactly, the videos would show her purchasing them for a penny. She would lose her job.

It seems like this big baby did not get what she wanted and is making up lies about the employee in retaliation. But like I told others, the blame lies on their parents for not raising them right and teaching them right from wrong.

Chao Pne

I doubt she is going to buy them. The only dishonest person who would take advantage of an error is YOU.

Most people were raised better and have morals. Then you have the nerve to lie and say she put them back on the shelf.

If she bought them for a penny she would lose her job. Nice try though.

Corporate will probably take the company's side since this person is trying to scam and steal from them. I blame their parents thought for not raising them right.

Guest

"Because I'm calling corporate." Oh no!! She's going to call "corporate." You have bigger problems coming than some garbage a dollar store. You may want to delete this post as you gave a bit too much information that will tell who snitched on them.

Cyndy Xbn

I agree, if the OP's parents raised him or her to be honest they would not be trying to get the item for a penny. I blame their upbringing.

Guest

Anytime in retail when something rings up one penny, that is an indication that item is not for sale and does not belong on the sales floor.

False advertisement

Family Dollar - False advertisement
Family Dollar - False advertisement - Image 2

I went into the store on the understanding that I could get three 12-packs of soda for $12 with a coupon. I couldn't find the coupon in my mobile app.

When I asked for help, the employees tried but said that this happens often. The advertisement says there is a coupon, but there isn't one. Today is April 4th. The sale was for March 30 to April 5.

The last time I used a related clipped coupon was February 24. I find it frustrating and insulting that a company would knowingly false advertise a sale without releasing an updated coupon in the mobile app. I told the wonderful cashiers that I would be escalating this issue, which is out of their control.

I intend to see that through. What a terrible experience for me as a customer and for them to deal with as employees.

Your store employees refuse to honor items in this week's ad. I tried to purchase the six-pack 16.9 ounces of drinks, Dr Pepper, A&W.

I was told I needed coupons from the website. However, the signage didn't state that, and there were smart coupons on the site for these items.

Family Dollar - Price Not matching as advertised & Employees with Attitudes - Image 2

I walked into the Family Dollar Located at 1939b NW 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311 to purchase the advertised wipes online that specified as in store purchase sale price & the cashier who was stocking up at the line told me that it's not on Sale & she had a huge attitude with it. She then called another employee (don't know for what reason since she already claimed to scan the price) who was stocking up merchandise to ask him as well.

These people have no customer service etiquette & on top of that Family Dollar has advertised different prices from what they are..

I was going to buy other items but was so displeased with this I just left and took my business else where! I called customer service but no one answered and then the call just dropped while you wait!

Preferred solution: Honor Price as described on your website for in store price as stated! And let your in store employees know they can't be speaking to customers with attitudes and however they feel like it.

User's recommendation: It's pointless to shop online cause their "in store" prices don't match

That price is online only. It says “shop in store” to signify that is an item also available in the store.

If you read Family Dollar’s policy, it even states prices can vary between stores and prices online. You need to lose your nasty attitude.

Just because you did not get your way, does not mean their customer service skills were poor and have poor ethics kiddo.

Poor management and discrimination in Taft CA

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

On 4/29/25 I went into the local Family Dollar to purchase some clothing for my child, and while I was picking out the items that I wanted to buy,I was approached by the store Manager Robert Flores,he stated that he had warned me before that as long as I am still in a relationship with my fiance that I would not be allowed on store property, and since I was clearly still in the relationship,He told me to get the *** out of the store and that I was not to Ever come back onto the property, He then pointed his finger at me and very loudly announced to the other employees and customers that and this I QUOTE " This one this person is not allowed in this store or on this property again she is banned from here permanently, because of his right to refuse service to me because of a disagreement he has with my fiance that is in no way related to the store. However he had no right to treat me the way he did and it is grounds for a lawsuit against Family Dollar in which I am currently seeking legal council and very much intend to proceed with a lawsuit for DISCRIMINATION,AND PUBLIC HUMILIATION AGAINST FAMILY DOLLAR For the actions of this stores employee (MANAGER). I DID NOTHING WRONG AND HAVE ZERO INVOLVEMENT IN THE MATTER BETWEEN MR.FLORES AND MY FIANCE WHICH HE HAD ZERO RIGHT TO TREAT ME THIS WAY WHEN I WAS NOT AND HAD NOT DONE ANYTHING WRONG.

So, today, 12/2, I returned to 2207 Niagara St, 14207 Buffalo, NY to exchange it with a receipt. The manager told me no, then said to read the return policy sticker on the box. I read it and it said I can exchange open boxes with a receipt. The manager still refused to exchange the heater.
